If it is true that what we receive in life will be in exact proportion to what we have given, then Ken Miller should look forward to a very rewarding retirement. Monday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach and VP of Football Operations announced he is retiring after Fridays game in Edmonton. Miller first entered the CFL in 2002 as a quarterback coach in Toronto, but prior to that spent nearly four decades coaching at the University and high school level in Southern California. His whole life has been dedicated to the teaching and development of young men and women in sports ranging from high school baseball to professional football. He arrived in Saskatchewan in 2007 as the teams offensive coordinator and helped lead the team to a Grey Cup championship. In the following two years as the teams head coach he became the first bench boss in Saskatchewan since Eagle Keys in 1966 and 1967 to lead the Riders to back-to-back Grey Cup appearances. He was also a finalist for Coach of the Year in both of his two seasons as the head man for the Riders. It is a very positive imprint on a team in a short amount of time but it is how he did it that was most impressive. During Mondays announcement President and CEO Jim Hopson said that Miller represented, "great character, integrity, family and team," and that those traits would continue on with the organization even though Miller is moving on to a new chapter in his life. He was a players coach, and father figure to the athletes whom he affectionately and respectfully referred to as, "the men in the room," and yet was able walk the line between becoming too close, and maintaining the respect necessary to be in charge and to lead. Miller said many times in the last few years that he cared for his players as people first, and athletes second, and all fans have to do is look back at his comments after the 2009 Grey Cup to know that those feelings were sincere. On that unbelievable night in late November after losing the championship in the most unusual way in sports history, Miller said while fighting off his emotions that he and the team would live with that night for the rest of their lives, and then proceeded to go and spend as much time as necessary with every single player in the locker room. When Miller addressed the media on Monday, he first thanked his wife Maureen for supporting him all these years. He then thank the coaching staff for their loyalty and effort, and then holding back his emotions once more, said that he especially wanted to thank, "all those men who have worn the Rider uniform and played for him." And he added that they have laughed together and cried together but they will not be forgotten. Character, integrity, family and team, will be Ken Millers legacy in Regina. At the end of every win as the teams head coach, Miller would stand in the middle of the locker room and after his address to the team ask, "what do Riders do?" Then together the men would yell, "Ride." Now it is Millers turn to ride off into the sunset, and with the relationship he has with the players on that team, I think it is safe to say that Friday in Edmonton will be a very emotional night for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, win or lose.
