REGINA -- Winless in three games to start the CFL season, the Saskatchewan Roughriders made a roster move Wednesday that sent shockwaves from the locker-room to the practice field. The Roughriders released veteran defensive back Tad Kornegay -- who cleared waivers and is now a free agent -- a transaction that wasnt particularly popular with those left behind. "It was a very quiet locker-room in there this morning," said fellow defensive back Lance Frazier, who called Kornegays departure "heart-breaking." Kornegay spent the last four seasons in Saskatchewan and was extremely popular among his teammates. He was part of the teams Grey Cup championship squad in 2007. General manager Brendan Taman indicated the Roughriders tried unsuccessfully to trade Kornegay before deciding to release him outright. Asked if the move was intended as a statement to the players, Taman replied: "If its a message, its a message. Thats up to the individual players to determine for themselves." Saskatchewan rookie head coach Greg Marshall was less cryptic. "No, Im not in to delivering messages," said Marshall, who would not rule out additional moves. "Well evaluate that as we go forward." The Roughriders are reeling after advancing to the Grey Cup the last two years, losing both times to Montreal. They opened this season with consecutive losses to Edmonton, the Alouettes and Hamilton -- and their performance grew worse with each game. And the situation doesnt get any easier as Saskatchewan travels to Montreal on Sunday to face the high-flying Alouettes (3-0). Prior to Wednesdays practice, defensive lineman Luc Mullinder addressed his teammates with some words of inspiration. "Weve got to get together," Mullinder told reporters afterwards. "When it comes down to it, its just us. Weve got to play for each other. From this point on, we have to focus on playing for each other as a group. "I just felt strongly that something needed to be said about how we go about the next few weeks." Marshall welcomed that kind of response from one of his veterans. "Its good to see the players stepping up and taking ownership," he said. The Saskatchewan defence took most of the heat after losses at home to Edmonton (42-28) and Montreal (39-25), but the offence was being questioned following the Riders 33-3 loss to Hamilton last weekend. "I definitely have to pick up my game," said quarterback Darian Durant, who has throw twice as many interceptions (six) to touchdown passes (three) this season. Veteran offensive lineman Gene Makowsky said its up to the Riders players to get the team out of its present funk. "Winning and losing comes with the CFL," he said. "Theres ups and theres downs. Theres pressure and youve got to respond to that pressure by playing well. "Were the ones who got ourselves into this situation and were the ones who have to get ourselves out." Thats the theme in the Roughriders locker-room. Having already lost one popular teammate, the players believe change must come from within. "Im tired of (losing)," said Mullinder. "Im tired of (reporters) asking questions that are negative. Im tired of fans saying things that are negative. I understand how everybody feels. "Its up to us as players to turn it around."
