CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs are set to hire San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria as their manager, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the hiring has not been announced. The team was expected to make it official on Thursday. The move ends a long search that began with the last-place Cubs targeting New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi, only to be denied a shot when he decided to stay put. Instead, the Cubs are hoping Renteria can help develop their young players and lead them to their first championship since 1908. He replaces Dale Sveum, who was fired after two seasons. The Cubs went 66-96 this season and finished at the bottom of the NL Central. A former major league infielder, Renteria spent the past six years on the Padres staff and had been their bench coach since 2011. Before that, he coached and managed in the San Diego and Florida Marlins organizations. Renteria also managed Mexico in the World Baseball Classic in March. The Cubs are counting on him to get the most out of young players such as shortstop Starlin Castro and first baseman Anthony Rizzo, along with prospects such as Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, Albert Almora and Kris Bryant. The lack of development by young players on the roster was a major sticking point with Sveum. And with more young players on the way, the front office decided it was time for a change. The Cubs were 127-197 under Sveum and finished in last place for the first time in seven years. They had targeted Girardi, a Peoria, Ill., native and Northwestern product who played for them. But the former catcher signed a four-year contract worth up to $20 million to stay with New York through 2017. That forced the Cubs to look elsewhere. Besides Renteria, they interviewed former Mariners and Indians manager Eric Wedge, Rays bench coach Dave Martinez, former Nationals and Indians manager Manny Acta, former Diamond-backs manager A.J. Hinch, and Brad Ausmus, who was hired by the Tigers on Sunday. They were also interested in talking to Boston bench coach Torey Lovullo. But according to reports, the Red Sox invoked an agreement banning Cubs president Theo Epstein from hiring any of their employees over a three-year period. Adidas ZX 700 Baratas . Mathias Niederberger made 36 saves in Game 4 as Barrie doubled up Oshawa 4-2 to sweep the best-of-seven second-round matchup. The 20-year-old goaltender was steady for the Colts all series, but was at his best on the road in Games 3 and 4 as he turned away 71-of-73 combine shots. The three-time Tour champion tumbled off his bike during Sundays ninth stage after his handlebars became tangled with Vladimir Karpets bike, damaging the same knee he hurt earlier in the race. Contador, who is in 16th place overall, trained with his teammates on Monday morning and said he will only be able to asses his condition when the race resumes Tuesday. "Im a bit worried because with a knee injury you cant ride with the same rhythm and the same frequency of pedaling as usual," Contador told a packed news conference at his hotel. The Spaniard said he damaged "the internal part" of his knee and is suffering badly from inflammation. "I want to remain optimistic it will get better before the first Pyrenean stage, but I have no idea how the knee will respond," he said. "Well have the first indication tomorrow." Tuesdays stage will take the peloton from Aurillac to Carmaux on a 158-kilometre hilly trek. The 28-year-old Contador seems dogged by bad luck in the race. He lost more than a minute during the first stage after being slowed by a crash that split the pack in two, and was lucky to escape with only cuts and bruises following a fall in the fifth stage. "Maybe Im getting old," Contador joked. "No, seriously, its just bad circumstances and there is nothing you can do about it." Contador tested positive for clenbuterol at the 2010 Tour and could be stripped of all his titles won since last July iff the Court of Arbitration for Sport rules against him next month.dddddddddddd He is one of only five riders to have won all three of the sports premier races or Grand Tours -- the Tour, Giro dItalia and the Spanish Vuelta -- but said his victory at the Giro in May could hamper his chances in the Tour. "Thats true that Im not as fresh as the previous years," Contador said. "But I dont want to use this as an excuse." Contador trails leader Thomas Voeckler of France by four minutes seven seconds and lags behind his main rivals. The Schleck brothers, Frank and Andy, are fourth and fifth, trailing by 2:29 and 2:37 respectively. Cadel Evans is third, 2:26 off the pace. Saxo Bank manager Bjarne Riis, however, remains confident Contador can win the race a fourth time, a feat that would give him his seventh Grand Tour victory, tying him with Lance Armstrong, Miguel Indurain and Fausto Coppi. "Im sure Alberto is frustrated because he is not used to crash," Riis said. "But we are still here to try to win the Tour de France. We are ready to fight." Asked about the time gap he has to overcome to triumph in Paris, Contador said he still has time and wont necessarily attack in the Pyrenees or the Alps. "There is a time trial in the penultimate stage and I can gain some time there," Contador said. "And there are other riders who need to attack if they want to win the Tour. The Schleck brothers need to take time from Cadel Evans in the mountains, because he is a very good time trialist. I just need to look after my knee and Ill attack when I have an opening." cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
