As the lone Canadian in the Tour De Frances 198-man field, Ryder Hesjedal really does carry the weight of a nation this year. The Victoria rider has shown he has the cycling chops to carry it off. And thanks to his Garmin-Cervelo team, he has a supply of "Ryder: Weight of a Nation" T-shirts complete with red Maple Leafs to prove it. With teammate Christian Vande Velde injured after a crash on the second stage of last years Tour, Hesjedal went from support rider to the teams marquee man. The 30-year-old finished seventh -- only Steve Bauer (fourth in 1988) has come higher among Canadians -- and enters this years race with the weight of expectations. He is the lone Canuck, with Torontos Michael Barry left off Team Sky. The race kicks off Saturday and features 21 stages over 3,430.5 kilometres before concluding July 24 in Paris. The team time trial goes Sunday. The Garmin-Cervelo team is already looking to Norwegian Thor Hushovd as a contender in the opener, a 191.54-kilometre road stage as opposed to the traditional prologue. The team will also be looking to help American Tyler Farrar win sprints in the early going. Hesjedals goal in terms of the overall general classification standings is to be in touch with the front men when the mountains loom in the second half of the race. "As far as the GC goes, its just trying to get through the first half of the race without any problems," he told The Canadian Press from France on Canada Day. "Thats going to be the name of the game." Hesjedal and his teammates have spent the last few days near the start, doing their final homework on the opening stages. "Ive been preparing for this race for a while now," said the laid back Canadian. "(Im) mentally ready and excited to get another Tour under way." It is his fourth Tour and he approaches the start line "a different rider." "Definitely the race I had last year its been in my mind. You want to not only do it again but try and improve. Also the team that we bring here, we have a lot of goals and options now for a successful race and thats what Im excited to be a part of." So what is his role on the team in the GC? Diplomatically, Hesjedal says it depends on how the dust settles -- whos doing well. "Yeah, thats the only way you can do this race," he replied. "You come here with your strongest men. Everyone has their strengths. We have a very complete team. Even to be here, with an opportunity to potentially ride for the GC along with Christian Vande Velde, thats a huge accomplishment. "Im very proud to have the ride I had last year and have the team hoping for the same and back me. To have two guys finish in the top 10 in recent years, its only a benefit. You want guys that are capable of that around you so you can do it." Hesjedals team has two new Tour faces in American Tom Danielson and Lithuanian Ramunas Navardauskas. The Canadian calls Danielson "an exceptional stage racer in his own right" while the Lithuanian is a young gun with "a huge engine." Just getting on the nine-man team for the Tour is a feat in itself. Garmin-Cervelo has 28 pro riders. "And 12, 13, 14 (of those) are capable and on form around this time of year," he added. Hesjedal says he has no superstitions going into races, preferring instead to focus on the task at hand, be positive and remember all the work that has been put in beforehand to get ready. "Its a year-round process," he said. He has been racing almost 3.5 pounds lighter this year, carrying just 157 pounds on his six-foot-two frame. "Well see how that works out in the big mountains later in the race," said Hesjedal, who is an accomplished climber. "Its definitely part of the equation. It might not sound like a lot but its definitely significant -- and a hard balance to keep that health and power and all of those things you still need, along with being as light as possible. "Ive managed to make that happen this year. I feel good, I feel strong -- a little bit leaner and lighter than last year." He lost about 4.5 pounds during the race last year. "I dont know much room there is to go," he said with a slight laugh. His fiancee will be cheering him on at the start and end of the race, returning to their home on Spain during the middle of the gruelling marathon. Eagles Jersey .
